The World Of Aldernon
Religion
The recorded origins of the ancient world are largely lost. Scattered references to a great race known only as The Elder Gods existed long before any others on the mortal plane. These Elder Gods were the creators of the deities whom now serve as the gods and goddesses of Aldernon. The motives and fate of The Elder Gods remain completely unknown, except for one, known only as The Weaver. She works the loom of reality for divine and mortal alike. She has no home plane and no worshippers. She has no clergy and does not grant prayers.
The deities of Aldernon have divided the portfolios of the realms among them. Within a portfolio, a deity is unsurpassed for control. Deities grant prayers to their faithful as well as supernatural powers, depending on the level of the cleric. Most have the ability to affect the undead. Each deity also grants secret, sacred prayers to his or her clergy which are unavailable to all but those faithful.
The general popular is polytheistic in that they invoke the god or goddess for favor that represents current need. Devotion to a specific deity is rare, but not unheard of. Clerics on the other hand, are monotheists. Worshippers of some gods acknowledge others (e.g. Galen and Healda) in their worship but most do not.
Druidic worship in Aldernon has created something of a schism between priests and druids. Druids are polytheistic in their approach to Nature, worshipping all gods and goddesses that control nature portfolios and receiving power colectively from Nature. But even the druids have a preference for certain aspects of Nature and will commonly choose a Patron that they revere above other gods and goddesses.
How much an individual knows about a particular religion is determined through a Knowledge (Religion) check.
DC5 = The names and nicknames of the gods and goddesses as well as their general sphere of interest
DC10 = Recognition of the holy symbols of the gods and goddesses and their general interrelationships
DC15 = General knowledge of the practices of a particular religion (e.g. favored dress, weapons, holy days)
DC20 = Obscure details of a specific god or goddess and how he/she is worshipped
DC25 = Enough knowledge of the special abilities and prayers granted to specific clerics to recognize them in use
Pantheons
The dieties segregate themselves by pantheons according to alignment. Most reside on the outer planes, but not all.
