Calender

The calendar of Aldernon was compiled in the common year (CY) 840 by the wizardess Selara to keep record of Aldernon's holidays and seasonal festivals.  Every year there is a lunar eclipse of Jolara on the 26th of Agâle, the Moon Festival. Every even year, there is a solar eclipse of Jolara on the 25th of Mitrûl, the Day of Darkness.  The calendar months are as follows: Mitrûl, Sembal, Cirith, Nonam, Agâle, Libre, Guald, Pyros, Keepril, Harque, Vesve and Birche.

Mitrûl

7, Day of Spirits - On the day of spirits, the shades of the dead return to the Prime Material Plane to conduct unfinished business. Spirits may appear in dreams, as visible phantoms or ghosts. Some spirits return to give advice or warnings to family members, while others seek out their murderers. Spirits roam the plane until the first light of dawn, when they return to the realms of the dead.

25, Day of Darkness - The Day of Darkness is a biannual solar eclipse which occurs on the even years of Aldernon's calendar. It is oft connected with fell events or other strange occurrences.

Sembal

25, Dragonbane - According to legend, the first dragon was slain on this day. Towns usually celebrate this holiday with dancing and merry making, culminating in the burning of a dragon in effigy on a bonfire.

Cirith

21, Day of Awakening - This day celebrates the first day of spring; it is the spring solstice. On this day, druids perform the Rites of Spring to ensure a good harvest in the upcoming year. This day is also the first day of the seven-day spring festival. Many shoppes close for a week of dancing and singing as well. The last night traditionally ends in a torch lit procession through town. This is also a holy day among the clergy of Sybel, as a day of fertility, and Erden, as it is the longest day of the year.

Nonam

1, Festival of Lights - This day celebrates days of longer light. In every home, candles and lanterns are lit at dusk and kept lit until the dawn of the next day. Superstition states this period of 24 hours of light is wards off evil in the upcoming year. It is considered an ill omen to be caught without a light on this day or to let a place burn dark.

10, Lover's Day - This day celebrates the mythical union of the first man and woman. On this day, lover's exchange vows and promise true love. Weddings performed on this day are considered to be steadfast. Lover's wear scarlet bands, or love strings, on this day with their lover's name attached. The elves celebrate love during the Festival of Stars.

Agâle

26, Moon Festival - The Moon Festival is an annual lunar eclipse where Jolara is swallowed by darkness and then relit by Sha’Harrai so that men will not stumble in the darkness. The eclipse lasts for approximately ten minutes every year, beginning at midnight. For the time that Jolara is in darkness, evil is said to run rampant throughout the realms. The powers of evil are at their strongest during the eclipse.

Libre

1, Dana's Day (Day of Spilling) - This is the one night of the year when the priestesses of Dana are freed of their vows of celibacy. They run wild through the cities where their temples lie.

6, St. Gryphos’ Day (Gryphos, Hethaemir Empire only) - This day is celebrated at the end of a three-day festival (Libre 4-6) called the Carnival of St. Gryphos. The patron associated with this holiday has been lost to obscurity, but the merriment has not.

14, All God's Day - On this day, the deities of Aldernon are venerated. All deities are considered to be equal on this day. Clerics of the various gods and goddesses spread the miracles of their faith, healing the sick and converting the masses. A cleric's power is at a peak on this day; he or she functions one level higher on this day.

21, Day of Balance - This day marks the summer equinox. All the powers of nature are restored to balance on this day. Druids perform the Rituals of Summer. The Day of Balance also marks the beginning of a seven-day festival similar to the spring festival. Shops close their doors in celebration of the beginning of summer. The last day of the festival is marked by a torchlight procession to the highest hill in the area. This day marks the coming of age. Boys become men at the age of 16, and girls become women at 14.

21, The Great Hunt (Marinose only) – The Great Hunt is a month long treasure hunt ranging all over the Marinose Islands. Rare prizes are given to those who complete the search designed the druids. It is both recreational and a good source of tourism for the islands.

Guald

4 Day of Revolt (Aldernon only) - This day marks the beginning of a civil war in Aldernon which led to the founding of the current ruling house.

27, Baron's Birthday (Aldernon only) - This holiday exists as a mockery of tyrannical rulers. It is considered a day for fools and merriment. People play pranks on each other and at dusk, one male youth is chosen as the Baron. This youth is chased through the streets and out of town by all the children of the city.

Pyros

5, All People's Day - This holiday is honored by most of the governments of the realms, except for Endore, Stygios and the Hethaemiir. On this day, the rulers of the various countries declare no power except that of the people. A council of commonfolk, selected at random meets the ruler and reports on the state of the realm. These requests are carefully heeded and normally acted upon. Local rulers are, thus, reminded of the famous revolt of Aldernon. Pyros 19 (Lomar) St. Talbot’s Day - This holy day is celebrated in honor of St. Talbot, the first priest of Lomar. Talbot died under torture at the hands of the first priest of Jarrek. Ritualistic tests of pain are performed among the clergy.

20, Sun Festival - On this day, the forces of life and good are at their zenith. Outersiders cower in their dark sanctuaries, and the undead cannot rise on that night to feed on the living. This day is celebrated by an all-day festival ending in an all-night dance. Many adventurers chose to deal with overwhelming evils on this day because of its reduced power.

Keepril

21, Day of Thanks - This day marks the beginning of harvest and the first day of autumn. The druids perform their fall invocations on this night. This day also marks the beginning of the Autumn Festival continuing for a commonweek as per the other seasons. The weather is usually good during this week, and farmers spent it bringing in the crops. The farmers have a separate celebration of thanks later in the year. This day is holy to the clergy of Erden.

Harque

2, Longshadows - This day is supposedly a holy day to the Lord of Shadows. Little else is known about it. It is customary to masquerade in outlandish costumes and parade about.

8, St. Malarr’s Day (Malarr, Hethaemir Empire) - Local celebration of the savior of the city of Malarr.

17, Day of Mourning - This day has been set aside for families to mourn the dead, both recent and ancient. Tales of great adventurers are told by the firesides in evening. This day is a community wake. Banshees and ghosts are more common on this night than on others, but they usually seek to listen than to attack.

Vesve

12, Day of Harvest - This is a day of rest for the farmers to celebrate the year's harvest. It is generally only observed in rural areas and is a day of rest, not of true celebration.

Birche

9, Festival of Stars (Elven holiday)- This elven holiday is observed primarily in elven lands but is becoming popular in some human cities. According to elven legend, the stars were created on this night by the death of the elven princess Phael and her lover. A special celebration is observed in Phael each year, where the star magic comes from the skies on that night to heal the sick and bless the city. Also, on that night, many doors into different worlds are opened by the magic of the stars.

12, Festival of Sorcery - This day honors the mages of the realms and the greatness of magic. One major city is chosen each year where the mightiest mages in the realms meet to trade knowledge, items, and spells. Mages in all cities celebrate this day when magic functions at its maximum capacity. The dual arcane has been outlawed in most areas on this day because magic cannot assume a passive mode. Most mages use their magics to benefit the common folk on this day, both to display their prowess and to spread an appreciation for the wonder and gift of magic.

21, Day of the Dead - On this day, the undead come to unholy power. They cannot be turned by clerics from sunset to first light. Protective spells and consecrated ground still keep them at bay, but towns, especially small towns, huddle in fear and lock up tight until dawn. This day also marks the beginning of winter and the winter equinox. On this night, druids perform the winter's evocation. Nature protects druids from the undead on this night by giving them the power to rebuke and damn as clerics do the rest of the year. The next day begins the Winter Festival, celebrated much as the other seasonal festivals.
