Description:

Maugrim is depicted as a wild looking man with long, black hair entwined with seaweed. He rises from the ocean and is depicted stripped to the waist and holding a trident. What is shown below the waist in various iconographs, is serpentine.

History/Relationships:

Maugrim is rumored to be the child of Sestihaculas and a sea hag. No party cares to refute or deny this. True or not, he bears neither alliance nor enmity with the serpent lord. Maugrim has been known to work with Fordaetha in the past, but the two have no current allegiances. As far as enemies are concerned, Maugrim has plenty. Jarrek opposes him over control of the undead. His reverie in the disruption of shipping and the drowning of sailors puts him at odds with both Gylwyn and Liranen. Maugrim ignores Gylwyn but actively focuses his efforts against Liranen through support of piracy and evil undersea creatures.

Dogma:

Those who enter the sea offer themselves to you of their own free will. Take from them the breath they hold dear as an offering and return them to undeath. Ships are nothing but large offering bowls that come to you filled. Accept them into your fold with lightning, wind and wave. Destroy the false priests of the sea who support the heresies of all land dwellers; let the sea run red with their blood.

Clergy and Temples:

Most Maugrimites are pirates and/or evil sea creatures. The majority of temples to the Drowned Lord are under the waves or on uninhabited islands. Trespass into these areas is met with swift vengeance. The Valley Of Lost Souls in Marinose is an example of the horrors occurring when Maugrim’s hand is felt. Maugrimites tend towards light armor or medium armor up to scale mail (the better to use on a pirate ship) and shields. Maugrim has no restrictions against the letting of blood and offers his faithful the ability to use the cutlass and trident as weapons of choice. His clerics have no power over undead who are not part of the seas; the undead known as drowned ones are created in large numbers by his clergy. Sacred places to Maugrim involve worship by blood sacrifice. There is little litany or music involved in Maugrim worship as those have little place underwater.

Special Abilities:

All Maugrimites gain swim as a class skill in addition to the option to take both cutlass and trident as weapons of choice. Maugrim also makes the following special powers available to his faithful. Unless otherwise specified, each power is usable once per day and affects the cleric only.

3rd – water breathing (1/day)

5th – call lightning (1/day)

7th – The ability to wildshape into a seaserpent (1/day) of the same size or one size larger.

Sacred Prayers of Maugrim:

Maugrim also makes special prayers available to his faithful.

Rituals:

Maugrim makes several rituals available to those who please him. Each ritual requires the presence of at least one high priest to perform. Maugrim may revoke his blessings at any time; experience spent is not recovered.

Ride the Storm - This ritual gifts the recipient with the ability to haste himself for 6 rounds per day; these rounds need not be cumulative. The ritual costs 1000xp to perform.

Scourge of the Seas – The recipient gains a fearsome reputation. Foes facing the recipient at sea suffer a -2 morale penalty to attacks, damage rolls, skill checks, and saves. This effect can be activated for as many minutes per day as one + Cha modifiers (minimum of 1). The recipient costs 1500xp to perform.
